EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 11, 2023) – Opening their home slate, the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team endured a first half punch at the hands of the Towson Tigers. Trailing 14-1 by halftime, some Mountaineers found late success in a 20-7 final favoring the visitors Saturday afternoon.
Cormac Giblin earned his second consecutive multi-goal game, and
Jimmy Hayburn tallied his first as a Mountaineer with a pair of fourth quarter scores.
Connor Barrett and
William Vandegrift finished the game with their first career goals, and
Jared McMahon extended his point streak to 22 straight games with an assist.
Mount St. Mary's goes to 0-2 on the year while Towson start at 1-0.
Proceedings out of the gate did not indicate a lopsided score. Both teams were firing on all cylinders with Towson scoring the first two goals and
Jeremy Wilson putting the Mount on the board to make it 2-1. Then the visitors went on a torrent, scoring the next six goals of the first period and six more in the second quarter. Towson ran the score up to 16-1 before Giblin found the back of the net to end the run.
Five of the home side's goals came in the fourth quarter. The Barrett and Hayburn scores put a positive spin as the game came to a close, finishing the contest with a 3-0 Mount run.
The Mountaineers remain at home, taking on Delaware at 3 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 15).
