Women’s Basketball Stays Active on Defense, But Falls at Fairfield

EMMITSBURG, Md. (December 16, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball held the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) leader in points and percentages under their averages, but a tough afternoon on the offensive side handed them a 62-44 loss to the Fairfield Stags.

The strong defensive showing limited Fairfield to 16 points and 11 percent under their median for the year. Leading scorer Janelle Brown was held to seven points and the Stags were held to seven triples as a team for the game. Only freshman Meghan Andersen found a consistent rhythm, scoring 19 points.

In a balanced scoring effort for the Mount, Jada Lee ended up the team leader with nine points. Jessica Tomasetti and Jo Raflo added eight apiece. Lee also led in rebounds with six, tying a career high, while Jaedyn Jamison finished with five, setting a career high.

Jumpers by Jackie Christ and Isabella Hunt got the Mount off to a solid start as the teams battled to a 5-5 tie. Fairfield cobbled together an advantage until the 1:57 mark when Raflo hit a three to tie the score. With the Stags up 16-15 after one, the home side built a steady 6-0 run to start the second, forcing a Mountaineers timeout. The offensive dry spell continued until a Tomasetti pull up nixed it with 2:54 left in the half, but those would be the Mount's only points of the quarter as the Stags opened a 14 point lead.

Fueled by freshman Meghan Andersen, Fairfield built the edge higher, climbing up to 19. A late rally kicked off by a Jamison triple and four consecutive points by Lee put a dent into it, and the Mount trailed 45-33 entering the fourth. But another scoring drought, coupled with foul trouble, thwarted any comeback thoughts as the Stags rode some clutch shots to the victory.

The Mountaineers head back to Emmitsburg to face Siena Monday (Dec. 18) evening at Knott Arena.
