Washington, D.C. (November 18, 2023)—A slow start proved to be the difference as Mount St. Mary's fell at Georgetown, 83-72, in the first game of the Georgetown MTE at Capital One Arena on Saturday afternoon. Freshman
De'Shayne Montgomery led four Mountaineers in double figures with a career-high 17 points.
Montgomery finished 7-of-13 from the field while adding four rebounds and three blocks in his 17-point effort for the Mount (1-2).
Dakota Leffew added 14 points, two assists and two steals while
Dola Adebayo chipped in a career-best 14 points off the bench. Adebayo was 5-of-7 from the field with four boards, three steals and two blocks in the game. Freshman point guard
Dallas Hobbs, making his first collegiate start, collected his first career-double double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Dontrez Styles led Georgetown with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists with Supreme Cook and Jay Heath each finishing with 17 points and eight boards for the Hoyas. Jayden Epps was the fourth Georgetown player in double figures with 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Georgetown (2-2) shot 30-of-59 (.508) from the field in the game and held a commanding 45-to-28 edge on the boards. The Mount shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) while forcing 20 turnovers.
Georgetown opened the game with a 13-2 run in the opening four minutes with the 11-point advantage ending up being the final margin. After the opening run, the Mount fought back with consecutive buckets from Montgomery and Adebayo at both the beginning and end a 10-3 run that pulled the Mount within four at 16-12 with just under 13 minutes left in the opening half. A
Ronald Jessamy putback dunk midway through the opening half kept the Mount within striking distance at 23-17, but the Hoyas used another 13-to-2 run to grab a 36-19 lead.
Montgomery and Reaves converted back-to-back driving lay-ups off Georgetown turnovers to cut the deficit to nine, but the Hoyas rounded out the first half scoring with a Jay Heath three-pointer for a 43-31 lead at the break.
Mongomery paced the Mount with 11 points in the opening half while Adebayo added eight. Styles poured in 15 points in the opening half with Epps and Heath each scoring 10. Georgetown shot 51.5 percent in the first half, including 7-of-16 (.438) from three-point range. The Mount shot 44.1 percent, but hit just 1-of-8 (.125) from three-point range.
The Hoyas were able to maintain a 10-15 point advantage throughout most of the second half to keep the Mount at bay. A
Joshua Reaves three-pointer made it 61-50, and a Leffew basket pulled the Mount within 63-52 with 9:39 left in the second half.
The Mount continued to fight, trimming the deficit to seven on an Adebayo putback with 3:10 remaining that capped a 12-to-3 Mount run. The Hoyas were able to hold off the Mount over the final three minutes to secure the win.
NOTES
- Hobbs made his first collegiate start in place of Xavier Lipscomb, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury.
- This was the 30th all-time meeting between the Mount and Georgetown with the Hoyas now holding a 25-5 lead in the all-time series. This was the sixth time the two teams have met since the Mount moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89 with Georgetown capturing all six contests.
- The Mount held a 39-to-6 advantage in bench scoring in the game, led by Montgomery's 17 points and Adebayo's 14.
