Men’s Swim & Dive Cash-in at Home-Opener Dual Meet; Women Set School Record

Emmitsburg, Md. (October 6th, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's swimming and diving hosted American University today in their home-opener at the ARCC Swimming Pool. The Men's team crushed the competition by a score 130-88, while the women fell to American 136-87. Between both teams the Mountaineers claimed 12 events with first place finishes.
 
Jessalyn Powell and Timmy Bonner were our divers today as they competed in the one-meter competition. Powell finished with a score of 124.50, while Bonner tallied a 164.40-point total.
 
Per the women's side, the team shot out of a cannon with a first-place finish in the first swim event, the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Hanna Aggen, Christina Lazari, Abigail Steckiel, and Madison Murphy took first with a time of 2:00.12, setting a new school record. The previous record of 2:01.33 held by Maddie McGraw, Lauren Gullickson, Amanda Moore, and Juliette Lacoste was set on October 24th, 2015.
 
Maddy Samuels claimed first in the 50-meter free with a finals time of 27.07, while also having a 2nd place finish in the 100 free (1:01.20). Madison Murphy and Christina Lazari finished first in their individual events as Murphy won the 100 free (1:01.20), while Lazari claimed the 50 backstroke with a finals time of (33.47).
 
The men's team had a day, collecting seven first place finishes. The men also started their day similar to the women in that they won their first event and set a school record the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Jason Fitch, Aidan Grady, Griffin Distler, and Lucas Hancock claimed first with a time of (1:44.06), trumping the previous record holders (John Mata, Aidan Grady, Thomas De Xavier, Peter Jones in 2021) by two full seconds. The men also owned the 50-meter breaststroke as Grady finished first (28.45), Griffin Distler second (29.64), and Jacob Wallace third (29.71), earning their team a combined 18 points.
 
Nicholas Santorelli snagged two individual wins today in the 100 (53.32) and 200 (1:57.93) free, claiming a new school record in the 200, while missing the same mark in the 100 by .20 seconds.
 
UPCOMING
Mount St. Mary's swim and dive returns to the ARCC Swimming Pool next weekend as they are set to host Howard on October 14th, at 1:00 p.m.
