John Mata, a five-year veteran of the Mountaineers swim team, moved to the coaching staff beginning with the 2022-23 season.
As a competitor on the team, most of his experience came in the backstroke and butterfly events, along with relays. His efforts paid off with a postseason appearance in every year for which he swam, including invites to the CSCAA Nationals in 2018, 2019 and 2021. Entering the 2023-24 season, Mata's name is on the Mount's record charts thrice, all as part of relays.
Hailing from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Mata went to Bishop McDevitt before arriving in Emmitsburg.
