EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 21, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's soccer benefited and battled the windy conditions at Waldron Family Stadium against the Siena Saints. Holding onto a 1-0 advantage thanks to an own goal, sophomore
Taylor Simmons secured the victory with a magnificent goal from well outside the box to secure the 2-0 final.
At 6-8-2 (4-4-1 MAAC), the Mountaineers sit on the verge of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship qualification. The Mount can seal their spot with a win over Rider in the regular season finale Wednesday, or if Quinnipiac defeats or draws with Manhattan. Wins by the Mount and Canisius over Niagara on the final day will also secure a home game for the opening round.
The blustery circumstances swept south from the mountain, which was at the Mountaineers' backs in the first half. This led to several balls sent over the endline for corners. On the seventh attempt,
Annie Sorando sent in the ball towards the back of the net, where a Siena player inadvertently forced the ball over the line for the Mount's first score.
Siena, now using the wind, played forward for a chance to equalize. But steady efforts from the Mount's defense negated many of the Saints' chances. Only one opportunity landed on goal, which saved by
Klil Keshwar. As time wound down, Simmons was found by
Luisangely Navas in open space. With plenty of room, the sophomore delivered by wrapping the long distance shot into the upper left hand corner of the net.
For Simmons, the goal is her first of the season. Navas picked up her second assist to extend her team lead in points to six. Keshwar finished with five saves and produced her sixth clean sheet.
A victory over Rider also ensures the most wins for the program since the 2012 season, when that team went 7-11-1.
