LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (October 21, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's men's soccer had several opportunities near the end of the match, but the team was unable to punch home a goal and fell 2-0 to the Siena Saints Saturday.
Despite the defeat, the Mount continues to hold a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, tied for sixth place with Niagara. The Mountaineers and Purple Eagles face each other November 1 in the final match on the schedule.
Ethan Russell managed to keep the Mount within striking distance after Siena's first half rush. The senior finished with four saves, but Bilal Hersi found the net in the 25
th minute to put the Saints up 1-0.
After Siena sent another round of shots early in the second half, the Mount began to push back.
Junee Lee registered a shot on goal via a header but was turned away by Saints keeper Bennet Glinder. At the 74
th minute, Junior Kone put more pressure on the Mountaineers with a strike for Siena's second. Lee and
Dominik Topolsky had chances that landed on goal towards the end, but the post and Glinder once again held firm.
The setback stopped a three-game point streak for the Mount and marks only the second time the team has been shut out all season.
Mount St. Mary's returns home for one final regular season home game with Rider. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 25) from Waldron Family Stadium.
