EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 2, 2022) – 15 seconds from pulling off a gutsy tie against the Lafayette Leopards, Mount St. Mary's men's soccer saw a shot spiral past the defense and into the net, falling in a 2-1 defeat as Lafayette stole away victory at the horn.
From the outset, the pace was fast as both teams found frequent shot opportunities. Each team had a run, but it was the eighth shot that cracked the scoreboard. Lafayette found themselves with three men in position to score. Mount goalkeeper
Ethan Russell made two excellent saves, but both times a juicy rebound went back to the Leopards. Lawrence Aydlett was the lucky recipient, who cashed in for the 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, as the Mount built a counter attack,
Anthony Milazzo and
Jesus Salazar found
Marcus Lewis on the right edge of the box. The sophomore blazed past two defenders to slide the ball pas the goalkeeper for the equalizer. Lewis scored for the second straight game, after hitting the go-ahead goal in last Tuesday's comeback win.
With fatigue and chippy play setting in, the game seemed destined for a tie, but the Leopards mounted one last charge. As time wound down, Lafayette's Carter Houlihan finds Sebastian Tis, who curved his shot into the top right corner. One last charge on the kickoff by the Mount came up empty. The Mount fell to 1-2 on the year.
Mount St. Mary's face George Washington on Labor Day (Sept. 5) and Bucknell next Friday (Sept. 9). Both matches will take place on the road.
