EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 5, 2022) – The Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team got the bounce back victory they wanted. With two goals from
Ruben Kiers and five saves from
Ethan Russell, the Mountaineers defeated the George Washington Colonials 2-1 in D.C. Monday.
Kiers took the team lead in goals scored, thanks to two headers. Both times it was the boot of junior
Jesus Salazar. The first came early, with a header from the right side of the net during the ninth minute. After carrying the 1-0 advantage into the half, the duo repeated the process off a corner in the 51
st minute. Thanks to his assists, Salazar maintains the team lead for points with seven.
From there, the team relied on their defense and Russell to hold onto the lead, withstanding many tests to the finish. Moments after the 2-0 lead, Russell denied a shot with a diving stop, but as the Mount tried to clear, a penalty was awarded to the Colonials. Tiago Carvalho made the attempt at the right corner, forcing Russell off his feet. But with the shot sticking to the ground, the Mount goalkeeper denied the stop.
A clean sheet still possible, the team continued to work on holding the shutout up to the 68
th minute. At that point, Alex Nicholson sent the ball toward the goal, which somehow found its way through several defenders and in the back of the net.
The last 22 minutes nearly turned the tide in different directions.
Ethan Glaser had a breakaway attempt which the George Washington keeper managed to keep a glove on. In the final minute, the Colonials made one last charge to force the tie. Roee Tenne fired a curling shot that sailed wide left, and Alhaji Turay followed with a shot off the left woodwork. Russell corralled the rebound and punted the ball away as the timer ticked to zero.
The victory marks a winning streak for the Mount against George Washington, coupling Monday's match with a win last year.
Mount St. Mary's seeks a second road win Friday (Sept. 9) when they face Bucknell. Kickoff is 7 p.m. from Lewisburg.
