Emmitsburg, Md. (September 13, 2022)--Karamo Bah provided the offense while
Ethan Russell stood tall in goal as Mount St. Mary's upended UMBC, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Waldron Family Stadium. Russell made 11 saves, including one on a second-half penalty kick, to help the Mountaineers win their third game in a row to improve to 4-2-0 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, the Mountaineers broke out on top with the game's lone goal in the 51st minute.
Ruben Kiers passed the ball to
Jesus Salazar to start the play. Salazar then sent a long cross into the box where
Karamo Bah was able to head the ball past UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones for the 1-0 advantage. It is the second career goal for Bah, and his first since scoring against Bucknell as a freshman in 2019. Salazar's assist is his team-leading sixth on the season.
Just six minutes later, the Retrievers (4-1-1) earned a penalty kick when Taylor Calheira was fouled in the box. Calheira took the kick, but it was Russell who came up with the big play when he smothered Calheira's shot to keep the Mountaineers on top. From there, Russell and the Mountaineer defense withstood a furious UMBC attack in the final 30 minutes to earn the win. Russell made seven of his 11 saves over that span with several coming on point blank headers.
The first half was played to a 0-0 standstill with UMBC having the top scoring chances, a pair of shots that grazed the top of the cross bar.
UMBC held a 31-to-5 shot advantage in the game, including an 11-to-1 margin in shots on target. The Retrievers also held a 13-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
The 4-2-0 start to the season is the Mount's best since opening the 2000 campaign with an identical 4-2-0 record. The Mount's three-game win streak is the team's longest since opening the 2019 season with a 3-0-0 mark. The win was the Mount's the first against UMBC since 1997, a 3-0 shutout on October 8
th of that year. The past 16 meetings had seen the Retrievers go 15-0-1, with the tie coming in 2001.
Mount St. Mary's closes out the non-conference schedule with a home game against Penn at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
