Emmitsburg, Md. (September 10, 2022)--An early scoring outburst propelled the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over visiting Hampton on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. The Mount scored three times in the opening 28 minutes to secure its first win of the season.
It did not take long for the Mountaineers (1-1-3) to take control of the game as junior
Kayla Pennington scored her first of the season in the sixth minute.
Kalli Bell started the play by lofting a free kick into the box where Pennington was able to flick a header that caromed past the goalkeeper for her first career goal.
The Mount added to its lead 14 minutes later on a nice passing play that resulted in
Madison Bee's second goal of the year.
Nicole Wilson sent a ball to the right wing where
Amani Green was able to collect the pass and send a cross to the middle. Bee deftly finished the play by tapping a shot into the left side of the goal with Green and Wilson picking up assists on the play.
Eight minutes later, another solid passing play pushed the Mount to a commanding 3-0 advantage. Wilson connected on a pass to
Maevyn Jones, who sent the ball to the middle to
Luisangely Navas. The sophomore was able to converted the cross with a nice shot to the left of the keeper for her first career goal as a Mountaineer. The Mount carried that 3-0 lead into the locker room at the half, and were kept the Pirates (1-5-0) at bay in the second half to cruise to the clean sheet victory.
Sophomore
Drew Camp started in goal for the Mountaineers for the second consecutive game, making one save in the opening half to record her first collegiate victory. Freshman
Emma Murray made her collegiate debut in the second half, making one save in 45 minutes of action. Wilson finished the contest with a pair of assists to move her into a tie for the team lead in scoring this season with four points (1g, 2a), joining Bee (2g) and Jones (1g, 2a). Mount St. Mary's held a 12-to-5 advantage in shots in the game, including a 3-to-2 margin in shots on goal.
Head coach
Melissa Sherwood posted her first win leading the program with the shutout win on Saturday. Sherwood is in her first season at the Mount after prior stints as a head coach at Saint Peter's and South Carolina State.
The Mountaineers return to action with their final non-conference game of the year on Wednesday, September 14, at UNC Asheville. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
