Emmitsburg, Md. (September 1, 2022)--Playing against her former team, graduate transfer
Maevyn Jones scored with 14:59 remaining to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 1-1 tie against Radford at Waldron Family Stadium on Thursday night. Jones headed home the tying score off a beautiful
Kalli Bell corner kick for her first goal as a Mountaineer.
Radford (2-1-2) took the lead in the 64th minute when Amy Swain converted a cross that was deflected by teammate Kat Parris. Paige Olson started the play with a nice run down the right side, cutting back to put a cross towards the middle. Parris got a piece of the cross that went to Swain, who sent the ball past Mount goalkeeper
Drew Camp for the 1-0 advantage.
Mount St. Mary's (0-1-3) fought back, earning a corner kick opportunity with just over 15 minutes remaining. That's when Bell was able to loft the ball to the middle of the penalty area where Jones connected on a header to make it a 1-1 game. It was her first goal as a Mountaineer for Jones, who transferred to the Mount this season after graduating from Radford in the spring. Jones scored nine goals in while adding five assists in 66 career games for the Highlanders.
Radford had a pair of late chances for the go-ahead goal, but Camp and the Mount defense stood strong to preserve the tie. In the 83rd minute, Helena Willson's head was cleared away from the back line by the Mount defense for a team save. The rebound went to Lilly Short, only to see her shot again stopped by the Mount backline for another team save. Radford's Willson closed out the flurry by shooting high over the goal.
The Highlanders earned a free kick deep in Mount territory with 30 seconds left, and after the cross went to the middle, Kayla Edwards headed the ball toward the Mount goal, only to see Mount defender
Amani Green head the ball away. The rebound went to Radford's Alexeis Kirnos, but her shot went safely into the arms of Camp with 17 seconds on the clock.
Radford outshot the Mount, 15-to-7, in the game while holding a 7-to-3 edge in corner kicks. Camp, a sophomore making her first collegiate start and appearances, made four saves for the Mountaineers while the Mount added in four team saves in the game. Veras made a pair of saves for Radford in the game.
The opening half saw the teams play to a scoreless draw. The Mount had it's best chance early in the half when
Madison Bee was free down the right side, but her shot in the third minute went right at Radford goalkeeper Trinity Veras. Mount St. Mary's had a 5-to-3 edge in first half shots while each team had a pair of saves.
Mount St. Mary's has some time off before welcoming Hampton to Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday, September 10, for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
