Mount Men’s Soccer Explosive in Second Half, Defeat Radford

EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 30, 2022) – Storming out of the locker room after halftime, Mount St. Mary's men's soccer scored four times in the final 25 minutes. The 4-1 final electrified the home fans at Waldron Family Stadium and piloted the Mountaineers to their first win of the season.

Veterans and newcomers alike took part in the scoring, led by junior Jesus Salazar. The San Diegan delivered assists on the first and third goals before capping off the night with a splendid shot off a free kick that sealed the match. Freshman Ethan Glaser added two points – both assists.

The first half showed little indication of the events to come. Radford held control for most of the opening minutes, outpacing the Mount in shots 11-2. As the visitors seemed to win most 50-50 balls and keeping possession almost 60 percent of the time, the home side had to stand firm on the defensive end. A scoreless halftime looked promising until Collin Hawes found the back of the net in the 44th minute.

Down 1-0, the Mount began to turn the tide in the second half. Beginning to win those halfway possessions, hit shots and find targets, the pulse of the match swung toward the Emmitsburgers up to the 68th minute. That's when Salazar crossed one into the box, finding the head of Ruben Kiers for the equalizer. The tying score was Kiers' first goal as a Mountaineer.

With the crowd barely given a chance to settle, the squad charged down the field again on the left side. This time Salazar found Glaser, who headed it along to the right foot of Marcus Lewis, earning a perfect sliding shot for the go-ahead score.

After Ethan Russell secured a 78th minute save, the Mount regained control of the offense. As the clock ticked down to seven minutes left, Jonathan Yowell sent one into Glaser, finding fellow freshman Bobby Marsteller. Getting past the keeper, Marsteller's first collegiate score for all intents and purposes put the game out of reach.

An already frenzied fandom then erupted as Salazar's goal rocked past the Radford defense, sailing into the top right corner.

The victory puts the Mount at 1-1 on the season and is the first triumph over the Highlanders in the program's history.

Mount St. Mary's remains home Friday (Sept. 2) to face Lafayette. Kickoff is 7 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
