EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 6, 2022) – For the second straight game, the Mount St. Mary's baseball team whacked a grand slam.
Efrain Correa, Jr. hit the shot in the seventh inning, capping off a five-run inning. But Sacred Heart collected 20 hits off the Mountaineers en route to a 12-5 victory Friday.
Correa's slam came in pinch-hit fashion after
Brady Drawbaugh brought in
Ryan Fisher on a single, followed by the Mountaineers loading the bases. The slam brought in
Giovanni Calamia,
Jake Maske and Drawbuagh. Maske – also a substitution – earned hits in both trips to the plate – a single and a double.
The home run was Correa's third of the season. A sophomore from New Jersey, Correa is batting .289 across 45 at-bats.
But before the five-run inning, Sacred Heart built a considerable lead. The Pioneers put up crooked number in three frames – the first, fourth and sixth innings. After the Mount closed the gap to 8-5, SHU continued to put up runs, adding four more ticks to the scoreboard. George Sutherland and Steven Schoen tallied four hits each, and Robert Farruggio drove in three including a home run.
Sacred Heart improves to 8-35 (6-13 NEC) while the Mount falls to 12-28 (5-14 NEC).
Weather permitting, game two is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday (May 7) at Veteran's Park.
