Late Home Run Spoils Mount Softball Senior Day

Bryant edged the Mount, 3-2, on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 24, 2022)--A late home run spoiled senior day for the Mount St. Mary's softball team as Bryant rallied for a 3-2 victory at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Sunday afternoon.  Maggie Kane had a pair of hits to lead the Mountaineers on the day.

The Mount (23-18, 15-6 NEC) broke out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Elizabeth King singled with one out and Vanessa Martin followed with a drive to the gap in left center field for a double to plate King with the first run of the game.  Martin advanced to third on the throw to the plate.  Kane followed with a two-out RBI single to right field to bring Martin home for the 2-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs (11-24, 9-9 NEC) got a run back in the top of the third.  Trystan Salvador lined a ball down the left field line that got past a diving Abigayle Perry for a lead-off triple.  Carlyn Hernandez followed with a groundout to Mount first baseman Kaia Bonshock to bring home Salvador.  Bryant had a chance to even the score in the top of the fourth when Sarah McKeveny beat out a slow dribbler to Mount starter Amanda Berkley.  Berkley's throw to first went down the right field line, allowing McKeveny to reach third base.  Aleix Hudson then grounded to Mount shortstop Mariah Godde, who threw home to get McKeveny for the out.

The game remained 2-1 until the top of sixth inning.  Alexis Clancy drew a two-out walk off Mount reliever Avery Neuhart, and McKeveny followed with a two-run homer the just made it over the fence in left field for a 3-2 lead.  McKeveny retired the Mount in order in the sixth.  Kane was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh, but McKeveny got the final three outs to perserve the win.

Kane finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate.  Berkley allowed one run and and two hits in four innings while Neuhart allowed two runs on two hits in three innings of relief.

Prior to the game, the Mount honors graduate students Berkley and Godde along with seniors Bonshock, Kane and Neuhart.

Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Towson.
