EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 23, 2022) – Mount women's lacrosse picks up their fifth consecutive victory as a strong third quarter secures a 13-9 win over Sacred Heart.
Zoe Hurlburt led the Mount with two goals, two assists, and eight draw controls.
Beanie Colson and
Dani Donoghue had three goals each. The Mountaineers outshot the Pioneers 32-19
Lydia Werlau had two goals, and two assists for Sacred Heart, with Grace Reinold adding three goals.
Madison Bradley made six saves for the Mount, while Bella Beaton made 10 saves for the Pioneers.
Hurlburt scored her 38th goal of the season to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead, but Sacred Heart responded with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 advantage. Colson tied the game at two after she ran around her defender and fired a shot near post that got past Beaton.
The Pioneers retook the lead to start the second quarter, but Donoghue scored her first of the day to tie the score at three. Sacred Heart and Donoghue traded goals midway through the second to keep the game level, but the Pioneers scored their third goal of the quarter to make the score 5-4. The Mount ended the quarter on a 3-0 run that Hurlburt kicked off with 2:55 left.
Erin Anderson found the back of the net on a quick counterattack that
Alayna Pagnotta set up Anderson for an easy goal.
Jordan Groover had a fantastic solo effort that increased the Mount's lead to 8-5 going into the half.
The third quarter got off to a slow start with both teams not being able to score, but
Christina Haspert ended the drought when she received a nice pass from Pagnotta, then turned around and fired a bouncing shot that went over Beaton's shoulder. Colson extended the lead to four after she sent her defender to the turf and took a step to fire a shot that found the back of the net. Haspert got her second to make the score 10-5, heading into the fourth.
The Pioneers scored two quick goals to start the fourth quarter to cut the lead to three, but Anderson got her second goal after Hurlburt found Anderson wide open in the middle, who scored to put the lead at 11-7. The Mount and Sacred Heart exchanged goals to keep the lead at four, but Donoghue completed her hat trick with 1:03 left in the game to make the score 13-8. The Pioneers scored on their final possession to reach the final scoreline of 13-9.
Mount St. Mary's will face Howard on Wednesday, April 27th at 3:00 p.m. in Washington D.C.
