EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 16, 2022) - The Mountaineers shut down Wagner's offense as the Mount picked up their second NEC win, defeating the Seahawks 9-5.
Brendan Lantieri had a career day with six points on four goals and two assists, while
Jared McMahon added three goals and two assists. The Mount outshot the Seahawks 42-33. This win improves the Mount to 5-8 and 2-3 in the NEC.
Benjamin Stewart and Aidan Clark led Wagner with two goals and one assist each.
Gunnar Luckoski made 11 saves in his first start for the Mountaineers, while Danny Brady made 14 saves for the Seahawks.
Wagner jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the man advantage, but
Kyle Cullen tied the game at one when he took on his defender one-on-one, then cut inside to create space and fired a near post that got by Brady. The Mount took a 2-1 lead with 5:40 left when J. McMahon found the back of the net on a Lanteir pass. Lantieri got his first goal of the day 50 seconds later after
Jeremy Wilson found Lantieri open, who then took a step to get in front of the net and bury the opportunity to take a two goal lead. The Mountaineers scored their fourth goal with 23 remaining in the quarter when
Justin Weick found Lantieri open in front of the net and fired a quick shot to have a 4-1 lead.
Wagner scored the only goal of the second quarter on a tight angle that squeezed between Luckoski and the near post to make the score 4-2. Luckoski made three saves during the rest of the period, while Brady made two to hold the score at 4-2 going into the half.
The Mount kicked off the third quarter with two quick goals from Lantieri that were both assisted by J. McMahon. The first goal was a fast counterattack that was worked around that led to an easy chance for Lantieri. Lantieri scored his fourth goal to give the Mount a 6-2 lead with 10:30 left. Wagner reduced the lead to three on Stewart's first. The Mountaineers and Seahawks traded goals to end the third quarter, with the Mount holding a 7-4 lead.
J. McMahon completed his hat trick to start the fourth quarter on a jumping shot that found the back of the net to take an 8-4 lead.
Connor McMahon scored the Mount's final goal on the next possession after he faked out his defender, took the inside lane, and fired a shot while diving to give the Mount a 9-4 advantage. Wagner scored their fifth goal midway through the quarter to reach the final score of 9-5.
