EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 13, 2022) – Down 6-0 after one-half inning, Mount St. Mary's baseball battled back against the Navy Midshipmen as they viewed a season sweep. But Navy held on in a 13-10 slugfest.
Tyler Long and
Brady Drawbaugh whacked their first homeruns of the year, with Long leading the offensive park with three RBIs. Five players had multiple hits, led by
Ryan Fisher with three. Relievers
Isaac Van Meter and
Brett Midkiff pitched scoreless outings, allowing the opportunity for a comeback.
Navy tacked on an additional run in the second for a 7-0 advantage. Mount's first change came in the bottom half of the frame, beginning with
Thomas Bramley scoring on a wild pitch.
Efrain Correa, Jr. singled home another run, setting up Drawbaugh's home run.
The Midshipmen responded with runs in the third and fourth, building a 12-4 lead. Needing another comeback, Long supplied his home run and
Tristan McAlister sent Fisher in on a single. The sixth inning carved a bigger wedge in Navy's lead with Fisher and
Tyler Grodell scoring. Each team added a run in the seventh to make the contest 13-10.
Down three in the bottom of the ninth, the Mountaineers lodged one final effort.
Jason Rivera and
Shane Wockley drew walks on Navy closer Landon Kruer. But the pitcher stymied the Mount, inducing a pop fly and two punchouts.
Mount St. Mary's fell to 9-18 while Navy improved to 15-18. Midshipmen head coach Paul Kostacopoulos became the 92
nd person in college baseball history to reach 1,000 career wins.
The Mount faces Northeast Conference leader Fairleigh Dickinson for a three-game series at home beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.
