EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 1, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's vision of their first Northeast Conference win will have to carry on for one more day, as the Wagner Seahawks came to Emmitsburg and mashed five home runs in the series opener, taking the game by a 16-6 final.
The Mount tallied some hits of their own, finishing the day with 12. Four players registered two or more base knocks, and
Ryan Fisher completed the day as the most clutch hitter with three RBIs. Pitching had a harder time Friday, but freshman
Jason Rivera delivered a bright spot with a scoreless ninth inning.
Early indicators seemed to favor a tight contest. Wagner got on the board in the first two innings, but the Mountaineers rallied both times. Two of Fisher's three RBIs came in the first as he brought home
Thomas Bramley and
Tyler Long on a single.
Hunter Hebert came in on a grounder in the second, and
Giovanni Calamia knotted the game again off a passed ball.
Wagner took control with a pair of moonshots of the bats of Maimu Kobayashi and Dante Faicchio. It would be the opening set of long balls the Seahawks struck. Griffin Selby's grand slam in the sixth put the game into the visitors' hands.
Long and
Tyler Grodell crossed the plate in the seventh to round out the Mountaineers' scoring.
Dropping to 4-16 (0-4 NEC), Mount St. Mary's looks to regroup in game two, a 1 p.m. start Saturday (Apr. 2) at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
