EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 9, 2022) – Mount women's lacrosse picks up their third straight win as they cruise past George Mason, 14-4.
Erin Anderson led the team with six points with a career-high four assists and two goals, while
Jordan Groover tallied five points with four goals and one assist.
Beanie Colson had five points on three assists and two goals, while
Alayna Pagnotta tied a season-high in goals with four. The Mount outshot the Patriots 35-14 in a rain-soaked game.
Ioanna Mantzouratos led George Mason with a goal and an assist, while five different Patriots tallied one point.
Madison Bradley made three saves,
Delaney LaRose made two saves for the Mountaineers, while Meghan Deehan made 11 saves for the Patriots.
George Mason scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the first two minutes. The Mount equalized with 6:55 left in the first quarter on Groover's first goal after she got around her defender and beat Deehan in a one-on-one. Colson gave the Mountaineers the lead on excellent passing from a counter-attack to give the Mount a lead they would not give back.
Both teams held each other scoreless for the first ten minutes of the second quarter until Groover scored on a free position shot that kicked off a 5-0 run to end the quarter. Pagnotta scored her first goal of the game as she fell to the ground and was able to fire a shot that went past Deehan. A minute and ten seconds later, Groover got her second hat trick of the season when Anderson found Groover in the middle, and she fired a shot that found the back of the net to make the score 5-1. Pagnotta scored her second goal with 22 seconds left, but
Abigail Zeigenfuse took the draw control, worked her way into a dangerous position, and passed it to
Christina Haspert, but the ball ended up in the net with two seconds left to give the Mount a 7-1 lead at halftime.
The Mountaineers started the third quarter on a 5-0 run that spanned for four minutes and eight seconds when Groover scored her fourth goal of the game. Anderson scored her first goal when she ran from the behind net and faked out Deehan to make the score 9-1. The Mount scored on their next three possessions, with Pagnotta scoring twice and Anderson scoring her first goal of the match. Haspert scored her first goal of the season as she fired a shot while falling to the ground to make the score 13-1. The Patriots ended their 43 minute and eight-second drought with 18 seconds left in the third quarter.
Anderson scored the Mount's only goal midway through the fourth quarter to make the score 14-2. George Mason scored two late goals to reach the final score of 14-4. The Mountaineers improve to 5-2 on the season, picking up their second road victory of the season.
Mount St. Mary's will head to Columbus, Ohio, to face off with the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, March 12th at noon on BTN+.
