EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 7, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball used strong offensive showings in the second and fourth quarters, and tenacious defense throughout, defeating Saint Francis U 69-53 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament.
Advancing to the NEC Semifinals for the fourth straight year, the Mount benefited from an upset by Bryant over #2 seed St. Francis Brooklyn. That means as the #3 seed, the Mountaineers receive an extra home game and host #4 Wagner in the semis on Thursday.
Michaela Harrison led the way with 23 points, her second highest scoring total of the season.
Kayla Agentowicz reached double figures with 11, followed by
Aryna Taylor with 10.
Jessica Tomasetti led the rebounding with a career high of seven, and
Kendall Bresee led in assists with four.
Saint Francis U finished their season at 8-22. Jenna Mastellone had 22 for the Red Flash while Jada Dapaa had 13 points and 14 rebounds in a double-double effort. Dapaa set the school single season record for rebounds in her ultimate contest with the team.
After a sluggish start scoring, Mount finished the half on a 4-for-6 tangent with four chips at the charity stripe from Bresee. She matched
Tess Borgosz with four by quarter's end as the home side built a 14-11 lead.
Saint Francis U stayed within striking distance for a portion of the second, but the Mount went on a burst towards halftime to take a double-digit lead. After Harrison struck with a jumper, Borgosz electrified the crowd with her second triple of the year. Harrison led all scorers with 12 points at the break, followed by Borgosz's nine and Agentowicz's eight.
In the third, the Mount built a lead as large as 16 before SFU mounted a comeback to attempt to keep their season alive. Kaitlyn Maxwell hit a three a ticks over the one minute mark, and Mastellone hit a layup at the buzzer to cut the deficit to nine.
Taylor assuaged all fears with a trey to open scoring in the fourth, followed by a layup from
Isabella Hunt. The lead never dipped into single digits the rest of the way. Agentowicz gave the Mount its largest lead of 17 with 1:01 left to coast to a victory.
The NEC Semifinals begin at 7 p.m. Thursday (March 10) at Knott Arena.
