EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 6, 2022) – As the regular season drew to a close, Mount St. Mary's bowling had the opportunity to take a first place crown. But a 2-5 weekend ended those aspirations, and with a 14-7 mark in the Northeast Conference, the Mount earned second place in the league as the season ends.
All the promise of a good weekend began in the opening match. Playing Quint Baker matches, the Mount drew Sacred Heart to start – the lone team left to conquer in the NEC. Getting out to a hot start, the squad averaged 216 for a clean 1,080, defeating the #19 team in the nation.
Day one finished on a sour note, with losses at the hands of Saint Francis U and Long Island. The 1,080 score would not only be the highest on Saturday but wound up being the highest on the weekend.
With some work to do to stay in the first place running, but also to stay out of the #4/#5 seed play-in game, the Mount responded on Sunday morning with a 988-833 win over St. Francis Brooklyn. In league play, the Terriers were the lone team the Mount topped all three times. However, the remainder of the meet proved excruciating with three more losses. #11 Duquesne and #12 Fairleigh Dickinson rolled four-digit scores against the Mountaineers, and Wagner edged the team by four pins.
Sacred Heart took the top spot and the No. 1 seed in the NEC Tournament later this month. By virtue of a tiebreaker based on a head-to-head, the Mount finishes in second with Duquesne third. FDU and LIU secured places in the play-in game.
Before the conference championship commences at the end of March, Mount St. Mary's competes at the USBC Sectionals next weekend in Tennessee.
