Late Inning Outbursts Help Lamar Defeat Mount Baseball

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 5, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's baseball found the seventh inning unfriendly Saturday. Lamar scored seven runs in that inning during the opener of the doubleheader and eight more in the nightcap, defeating the Mount by final scores of 12-1 and 14-5 in Beaumont.

Tristan McAlister, Tyler Grodell and Brady Drawbaugh led the offensive charge, registering three hits apiece, including mutli-hit efforts in the second game. Starter Bryant Shives delivered a quality start of three runs over six innings, giving the Mount a great opportunity to take a victory.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the first lead of the afternoon, when Drawbaugh tallied a single to score Thomas Bramley. But that was all the runs the Mount could muster, as Lamar went on to score 12 unanswered. Two crooked innings – the seven run seventh and four more in the fourth – helped the Cardinals win.

McAlister allowed the Mount to bounce back with a double in the second inning of game two before stealing home to give his team a 2-0 lead. The following inning, Bramley scored on a passed ball and Tyler Long hit a sacrifice fly to double the advantage.

Lamar rallied to tie by the fourth, but the Mount regained the lead in the sixth on another McAlister hit – a single to score Ryan Fisher.

Down 5-4, the Cardinals mounted their comeback one inning later. In immediate fashion they loaded the bases for designated hitter Josh Blankenship, who tripled in all three runs. Clutch hits kept the rally going, transforming a one-run deficit to a 12-4 lead. Matthew McDonald homered in the eighth to finalize the scoring.

The series concludes with a 12 p.m. Eastern finale Sunday (March 6).
