EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 4, 2022) – Down 5-1 Friday to Lamar in Beaumont, the Mount St. Mary's baseball team staged a comeback to pull within a run. But the Cardinals' pitching held the Mount at bay the rest of the way, clinching a 5-4 win.
Thomas Bramley was the lone multi-hit performer in an efficient effort, with the Mount scoring four runs off six hits, two walks and two hit batters. On the mound,
Max Moore and
Steve Schenning delivered scoreless relief outings to give their team an opportunity to complete the comeback.
Mount took the first advantage after
Tristan McAlister came in to score on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead. Lamar responded by steadily building a 5-1 lead through the middle innings. A Deric LaMontagne triple in the second switched the lead to the Cardinals, and Kyle Harper homered in the fourth.
Bramley tripled to spark the rally in the sixth.
Tyler Grodell singled home his catcher, and after an error,
Brady Drawbaugh grounded out which allowed Grodell to score. When
Nick Fleming stole second later in the inning, an error by the Cardinals catcher granted
Shane Wockley the plate. With the tying run in scoring position, Lamar used a pitching change to stall the rally and a strikeout ended the inning.
In the eighth, the Cardinals had to strike out four Mountaineers to prevent another rally after a passed ball allowed one of those batters to reach base. One last hope came in the ninth when
Jake Maske was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. But three consecutive outs sealed the contest for the Cardinals.
The teams meet again on Saturday (March 5) for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
