Tori Bowles, Olivia Murphy Spark Mount St. Mary's to Series Sweep over Wagner

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 27, 2022)--Tori Bowles hit a tie-breaking two-run home in the fifth inning while Olivia Murphy pitched four innings of one-hit shutout relief to lift Mount St. Mary's past Wagner, 5-2, at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, the Mount completed a three-game sweep of the Northeast Conference series to improve to 10-14 overall and 4-2 in NEC play.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Wagner (5-19, 0-3 NEC) took the lead with a run in the top of the third inning.  Natalie Del Ponte led off with a double to left center field and was at third base with two outs.  Keighan Ward was able to connect for a base hit off the glove of Mount third baseman Maggie Kane to give Wagner the 1-0 lead.

Mount St. Mary's answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.  Mariah Godde singled with one out to start the rally.  Godde stole second base, and then came home on Abigayle Perry's double to the left-field fence.  After Bridgette Gilliano was retired on a popout to short for the second out, Kaia Bonshock came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to bring home Perry for the go-ahead run.

Wagner fought back to tie the score in the top of the fourth inning.  Kate Wolf walked and Penelope Russ singled to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Murphy came on in relief of Mount starter Amanda Berkley and got the first out of the inning on a fly out to right with Wolf moving to third on the play.  Murphy then got Scarlett Lloyd to ground to short, but the throw to first for the double-play was late, allowing Wolf to score the tying run.

The Mount took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Gillano doubled to center field with one out off reliever Eve Harvey to start the rally.  Bonshock grounded to second to move Gilliano to third with two outs, setting up Bowles for the big hit.  Bowles connected for a line-drive homer over the center field fence to put the Mount on top, 4-2.  Vanessa Martin followed with a base hit, and she stole second base to get into scoring position for Elizabeth King, who came through with an RBI single for a 5-2 lead.

That was all the scoring Murphy would need as she retired the Seahawks in order in each of the final two innings to earn the victory.

Bowles and King each went 2-for-3 at the plate as the Mount tallied 10 hits in the game.  Murphy struck out three while allowing just one hit in four innings of relief to improve to 3-2 on the season.  Berkley allowed two runs in three innings.

The Mount is back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Coppin State.
