Mount Women’s Lacrosse Cannot Complete Comeback as Bryant Pulls Away in the Fourth Quarter

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 26, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse falls to Bryant 14-10 as the Bulldogs shut out the Mountaineers in the fourth quarter. Dani Donoghue had a career-high six points with five goals, career-high, with one assist, while Zoe Hurlburt added three goals and one assist. The Mount outshot the Bulldogs 31-27, but Bryant had a slight lead in shots on goal, 21-20.

Kenna Kaut led the way for Bryant with five goals and one assist; Skylar Simmonds had three goals and two assists, while Cassidy Burns had four assists.

Madison Bradley made seven saves for the Mountaineers, while Sam Centofante made ten saves for the Bulldogs.

Bryant opened up the first quarter with two quick goals to take a 2-0 lead within the first three minutes. Hurlburt cut the lead in half when she ran past her defender, found a wide-open lane, and fired a shot that found the back of the net with 10:02 left. The Bulldogs scored two more goals to take a 4-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Donoghue got her first goal on the next possession when she found some space and fired a shot past Centofante. The Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run that spanned just over two minutes to increase the lead to five. Donoghue and Hurlburt each scored a goal to cut Bryant's lead to 7-4 at the end of the first quarter.  

The Mountaineers got on the board first when Erin Anderson converted a free position attempt to cut the deficit to two. Donoghue cut the lead to one when she made a move to get around her defender and fired a shot from a tight angle that found the back of the net with 9:45 remaining in the second quarter. Bryant then went on a 4-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a five-goal lead, but Hurlburt scored a late goal to trail 11-7 going into halftime.

The Mount held the Bulldogs scoreless for the third quarter through solid defense. Donoghue got the Mount on the board when she ripped a shot that found the back of the net to make the score 11-8. Beanie Colson reduced the deficit to two 13 seconds later when she split two defenders and fired a low shot that beat Centofante. Hurlburt made the score 11-10 with 2:55 left on a nice shot that went far post.

Bryant scored two goals to kick off the fourth quarter and jump out to a 13-10 lead with 11:59 left. Both teams traded possessions firing shots until Kaut sealed the game with her fifth goal with 3:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.
