Emmitsburg, Md. (March 26, 2022)--Mount St. Mary's used a late rally in the second game to sweep today's Northeast Conference doubleheader over Wagner on a cold and windy afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus. The Mount took the opening game of the twinbill by the score of 5-1 before rallying from a 4-0 seventh-inning deficit to secure an improbable 5-4 win in nine innings in the nightcap.
Abigayle Perry led the way for the Mount (9-14, 3-2 NEC) going 5-for-9 with a double, a triple, a home run and six RBI in the two-game sweep.
In the second game, Wagner broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-0 advantage. After Kate Wolf was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the first run of the game, Nora Conway provided a bases clearing two-out triple to the fence in right field to give the Seahawks (5-18, 0-2 NEC) a four-run advantage.

The score remained 4-0 until the Mount rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out,
Elizabeth King started the rally with a single through the right side of the infield.
Mariah Godde then walked to push pinch-runner
Zoe Truxon to second base. Perry followed with a three-run blast to left field to cut the Mount's deficit to 4-3. It is Perry's team-leading fifth home run of the season. Bridget Gilliano followed by beating out a grounder to the pitcher to put the tying run on base. Gilliano then stole second base, her second steal of the game and team-leading 19th stolen base of the season. Gilliano then advanced to third on a wild pitch, setting the table for
Kaia Bonshock, who came through with a clutch single to right field to tie the score.
Starting pitcher
Olivia Murphy re-entered the game in the top of the eighth inning and set the next six Seahawks down in order to set the stage for the bottom of the ninth inning. In the ninth, Godde double deep to right field to put the winning run in scoring position. Perry was next up, and she hit a dribbler to pitcher Scarlett Lloyd. Lloyd threw to first to get Perry out, but Godde never stopped running, made the turn for home and beat the throw to the plate for the game-winning run.
Gilliano went 3-for-4 with two steals and a run scored for the Mount in the win with Godde finishing 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Bonshock added a pair of hits in the victory while Perry finished with four RBI. Murphy earned the win, allowing three runs and six hits in seven innings of work to improve to 2-2 on the year.
Avery Neuhart allowed one run and one hit in two innings of relief.
In the opening game, the Mount broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 5-1 victory. Perry led the way going 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two stolen bases while
Amanda Berkley tossed a complete-game three-hitter with five strikeouts.
The Mount broke on top with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Wagner pitcher Eve Harvey.
Vanessa Martin led off with a single to second base with
Tori Bowles following with a base hit to right field.
Maggie Kane bunted the runners into scoring position, and King scored Martin with a sacrifice fly. After Godde walked, Perry doubled to left field to score Truxon for a 2-0 lead.
Wagner got a run right back in the top of the fifth inning. Bianca Worthy singled and came all the way around on a Mackenzie Miller double to right to make it a 2-1 game. Miller moved to third on a ground out, but Berkley was able to strand her there to keep the Mount on top.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bonshock doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a
Kassidy Johnson sacrifice, and scored on a Martin sacrifice fly. The Mount added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With Godde on first after a two-out walk, Perry drove the ball off the fence in deep center field for a triple to plate Godde. Perry also scored on the play when the throw to third was off the mark.
In addition to Perry's big game, Bowles finished with a pair of hits in the win. Berkley's final line in the complete-game win was three hits and one run allowed with five strikeouts. Berkley improves to 5-5 on the season with the victory.
The teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game at noon tomorrow at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.
