EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 26, 2022) – Another battle of wills pitted Mount St. Mary's baseball against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. And in an unfortunate repeat of Friday's events, FDU used a five-run inning to claim victory over the Mountaineers, this time by a 9-7 final.
The Mount got the upper hand early, kicked off by a triple from
Thomas Bramley that brought home
Ryan Fisher and
Aiden Tierney.
Tyler Grodell followed up with a run producing grounder, sending Bramley in for a 3-0 lead. The next inning, Tierney smacked a single to send
Tristan McAlister to the plate for a 4-1 advantage.
Homers by Brelon Harden and Luke Cantwell helped the Knights rally back, closing the gap to 4-3. A fifth inning bases loaded walk to Harden secured the tie. Mount regained the lead on a squeeze play in the sixth. Fisher laid the bunt down, allowing McAlister to score.
FDU planted their stake in the bottom of the sixth. Four of five batters were hit by pitches, inciting a rally that sent five Knights across the plate. Harden once again supplied the most damaging blow with a two-run single.
Taking advantage of wildness from the FDU staff, the Mount attempted a comeback in the following frame.
Shane Wockley was hit with the bases full, and Tierney demonstrated patience with a free pass that scored
Tyler Long. But a strikeout and a grounder ended the threat at 9-7 Knights.
Despite the efforts of freshman pitcher
Isaac Van Meter – four strikeouts over three innings surrendering a lone run – six Mountaineers came to bat with all six retired, nixing any would-be rally.
Mount St. Mary's looks to prevent the sweep with a 1 p.m. Sunday (March 27) finale.
