EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 26, 2022) – The Mount men's lacrosse team picks up their first conference win defeating Sacred Heart 14-13.
Noah Daniels scored a career-high four goals, while
Connor McMahon scored three goals and tallied one assist to lead the way for the Mountaineers.
Griffin McGinley tied a career-high in saves with 21 saves on 44 shots faced.
Justin Weick and
Jared McMahon both had two goals and one assist for the Mountaineers.
Sacred Heart's Sal Miccio had a team-high three goals and added one assist, while Jake Grab had a game-high three assists with one goal.
Nicky LaBanca made 10 saves for the Pioneers between the pipes.
Sacred Heart got on the board first to take an early lead, but J. McMahon scored on the next possession on a shot that beat LaBanca near post with 10:59 left. Daniels scored his first goal of the game after
Caden Cote found Daniels open in front of the net, who fired a shot over LaBanca's shoulder.
Jake Krieger gave the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead with six minutes remaining, but the Pioneers ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Mount started the second quarter on a 2-0 run to tie the game when C. McMahon took the ball all the way and fired a shot that found the back of the net then Daniels scored his second goal after he juked out his defender to create space and fired a quick shot that got past LaBanca. After two quick goals, the Pioneers took a 7-5 lead with 8:59 left after two quick goals. The Mountaineers responded with a 3-0 to take an 8-7 lead with two goals from Daniels and one from
Colin Allen. The Pioneers scored two late goals to have a 9-8 advantage at halftime.
The third quarter started with both teams trading shots on goal, then J. McMahon tied the game at nine after running around the cage and fired a high shot that found the back of the net. The Mount took the lead on a counter-attack that Jackson Philips started after he picked up a ground ball and found Weick open, who fired a low shot that got past LaBanca. Sacred Heart and the Mountaineers traded goals midway through the quarter to keep a one-goal lead. The Pioneers tied the game at 11 with 3:50 left, but the Mount's
Brendan Lantieri scored on the man advantage to take a 12-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter started with both teams trading shots and possessions until 5:59 left, when Miccio scored on a man advantage situation to tie the game up. Weick scored 47 seconds later to retake the lead after he fired a bouncing shot on a tight angle. C. McMahon scored the game-winner when his brother J. McMahon found him open, then spun away from the defender and finished the opportunity to have a 14-12 lead with 3:05 left. The Pioneers scored a goal with 20 seconds left to reach the final score of 14-13.
