EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 19, 2022) – Mount women's lacrosse finished their out-of-conference schedule with a 17-4 to pick up their first-ever victory against Furman.
Zoe Hurlburt had a career-high seven points on four goals and a career-high three assists.
Beanie Colson and
Dani Donoghue had two goals and one assist, while four different Mountaineers registered two goals. The Mount outshot the Paladins 29-20 with a 23-12 advantage in shots on goal.
Meagan Beal and Lauren Farber led Furman with two goals each, while Page Harman added an assist.
Madison Bradley and
Delaney LaRose made four saves each for the Mountaineers, while Lily Rathbun made six saves for the Paladins.
The Mount got on the scoreboard first when Hurlburt found
Erin Anderson in the middle, and Anderson made a spin move to shake off her defender and beat Rathbun near post for a 1-0 lead. Both teams traded possessions, then Colson passed the ball to Hurlburt on a free position attempt, and Hurlburt went straight through the defense and found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers went on a 3-0 run with goals from
Anna McQuay, Anderson, and Hurlburt to increase the lead to 5-0 with 3:16 left. Furman and the Mount traded late goals to keep a five-goal advantage going into the second quarter.
The Mount opened up the second quarter with another 3-0 run. Lindsey Toliver found Colson wide open, cutting to the middle, and Colson fired a shot past Rathbun less than two minutes into the quarter. Colson and Donoghue each converted a free position attempt to increase the lead to 9-1. The Paladins reduced the lead to eight, but
Lizzie Stevenson scored her first two collegiate goals to give the Mountaineers an 11-2 lead heading into the locker room.
The Mount started the third quarter with a 3-0 run that lasted about five minutes when Hurlburt took her defender one-on-one and freed up some room for a low shot that Rathbun could not handle to give the Mountaineers a ten goal lead.
Alayna Pagnotta scored her second goal on a counter-attack that Hurlburt found her open in front of the net to make the score 13-2. Donoghue scored a free position attempt to increase the lead to 12 goals with 9:40 left. Hurlburt got her fourth goal on a free position attempt to give the Mount a 15-2 lead.
Jordan Groover scored three minutes into the fourth quarter to give the Mount a 14 goal advantage. Furman responded less than two minutes later to make the score 16-3. McQuay scored her third goal of the year after she ran around her defender and fired a shot past Rathbun to put the lead back at 14. The Paladins scored the last goal on a free position attempt to reach the final score of 17-4.
Mount St. Mary's heads to Smithfield, Rhode Island to kick off NEC play against Bryant on Saturday, March 26th at 1:00 p.m.
