EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 5, 2022) – The Mountaineers pick up their first-ever win against Navy this afternoon behind junior Giblin Cormac's five goals and sophomore
Griffin McGinley's 21 saves, both career highs. Senior
Jared McMahon added two assists and one goal, while senior
Steven Schmitt tallied two assists.
Navy's Dane Swanson and Patrick Skalniak each had three goals and two assists to lead the Midshipmen, while Pat Ryan made 11 saves in net.
Navy scored the game's first goal about a minute in to take an early 1-0 lead. The Mount's
Justin Weick scored the first goal of the 2022 campaign after juking out his defender and beating the goalie over his shoulder. The Mount then was gifted a goal by the Midshipmen after sophomore
Mitchell Dunham had a shot rattle off the post, and the Navy defender picked up the ball and passed back to his goalie, who was not paying attention and let in to give the Mount a 2-1 lead. Giblin got his first goal of the day to increase the Mount's lead to two, but Skalniak returned the favor five minutes later, to give the Mount a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Navy kicked off the second quarter with a 3-0 run that lasted through the first four minutes to retake the lead. McMahon scored with 3:44 remaining in the quarter to reduce Navy's lead to 5-4. Two minutes later, Giblin scored his second of the day after he outran his defender from behind the cage, then blasting a shot past the goalie to tie the game up at five. Skalniak scored his second goal to give the Midshipmen a 6-5 lead going into the half.
Senior
Jake Krieger got the Mount off to a fast start in the third quarter, scoring 34 seconds in after splitting the defense and beating the goalie far post to tie the game at six. Giblin completed his hat trick with 1:27 remaining in the quarter, but Navy responded 42 seconds later to keep the game tied. The Mountaineers closed out the third quarter on a 3-0 run that was kicked off by another Navy own goal. Sophomore
Jackson Phillips scored his first collegiate goal after he went coast to coast and fired it past the goalie to give the Mount the lead back. Giblin capped off the 3-0 run with his fourth goal of the day.
Giblin scored his final goal of the day after he received a pass from
Tyler Smith and fired it past the goalie while getting hit by a defender to give the Mount an 11-7 lead. Navy ended their 16:34 goal drought to cut the Mount's lead to three. Skalniak completed his hat trick with 1:57 remaining to reach the game's final score of 11-9.
