Frederick, Md. (February 3, 2022)—The Mount St. Mary's men's and women's tennis teams opened the spring season with victories over Coppin State at the West Winds Tennis Center on Thursday. The men's team posted a 7-0 win while the women were victorious by a score of 6-1.
On the men's side, the Mount took the doubles point on the strength of a pair of victories.Â
Elliot Stevens and
Giovanni Abriola earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Coppin State's Anas Haddou and Luka Markovic.Â
Russell Armstrong and
Christos Dagklis edged Vansh Kapoor and Sergiu Medesan, 7-6 (9-7) at the No. 2 doubles position.
In singles action, the Mount won all five matches played. Stevens posted a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Medesan to lead things off.Â
Filippos Zachiotis had to work hard for a 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 win at No. 2 singles while
Jarrett Karnibad edged Hannou, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, at No. 4. Abriola cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3, while
Nick Huynh edged Kapoor, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6, at No. 5 singles.
Amber Policare was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at the No. 1 singles position over Coppin State's Lucia Placidi.Â
Shirley Liang captured the No. 2 singles win, 7-6, 6-3 over Iva Jankovic while
Adriana Barney won 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in a hard-fought match at No. 4 singles against Christy Turner. Â
Ana Alvarez-Storni won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles over Megan Etienne with
Ryan McCarthy taking a 2-6, 7-5, 15-13 win Mackenzie Jones.
In doubles play, Policare and Mathur won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles with Liang and Barney winning 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Coppin State took the win at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.
The Mount men's and women's tennis teams have a quick turnaround with a road match at Duquesne at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.
