Men’s Lacrosse Holds off UMBC’s Late Rally to Win 9-8

EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 25, 2022) – The Mountaineers picked up their second win all-time against UMBC after holding the Retrievers to one goal in the first 30 minutes to win 9-8. Cormac Giblin picks up his second hat trick of the season, and Connor McMahon tallies two assists and adds a goal to lead the offense for the Mount. Jared McMahon extends his scoring streak to 10 games after scoring two goals. The Mountaineers outshot the Retrievers 44-28, including 17-6 in the second quarter.
 
UMBC's Jack Thomas had two goals and one assist to lead the team in points, while Mike Doughty scored two goals.
 
The Mount's Griffin McGinley made eight saves, while Tommy Lingner made 11 saves for the Retrievers.
 
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard first when Jake Krieger rifled a shot to make it 1-0. UMBC tied at one with 5:32 left in the first when Nick Dupuis found Dane Hall open and Hall fired a low shot past McGinley. The Mount took a 2-1 lead when C. McMahon passed the ball from behind the net, and Giblin fired a shot from a tight angle to beat Lingner with 33 seconds left in the quarter.
 
The second quarter started with both teams trading possessions until Colin Allen found J.McMahon open, and he fired his shot far post to beat Lingner to give the Mount a 3-1 lead midway through the second quarter. C. McMahon scored his second goal of the year when Brendan Lantieri found him in the middle, and McMahon put the shot too low for Lingner. Giblin got his second goal with 44 seconds left in the second quarter off a Noah Daniels assist to give the Mountaineers a 5-1 lead going into halftime.
 
The third quarter started with both teams trading shots on goal for six and half minutes until UMBC ended their 27-minute goal drought to make the score 5-2. The Retrievers cut the lead down to two goals after Dupuis scored on the man advantage less than a minute later. C. McMahon scored his goal of the game to give the Mount a 6-3 lead. UMBC's Brett Baucia made the score 6-4, but J. McMahon put the lead back at three goals with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter.  
 
Ten seconds into the fourth quarter, the Retrievers scored to reduce the Mount's lead to two. Lantieri scored his third goal of the season after he picked up a ground ball and fired a shot near post that beat Lingner to restore the lead back to three. UMBC scored two goals in less than a minute to put the score at 8-7. Giblin scored his third goal after the Retrievers made an errant pass that found Giblin, and he fired the ball into an empty net to give the Mountaineers a 9-7 lead with 5:19 left in the quarter. Doughty scored his second goal to cut the Mount's lead to one with 2:52 remaining. McGinley made one save, and UMBC put two shots wide in their last attempt, and the Mount was able to run out the clock to secure their third victory of the season.
