Washington, D.C. (February 21, 2022)--The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team improved to 2-2 on the season with a 5-2 victory over Howard on Monday at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's (WTEF) East Capitol Campus in Southeast D.C.
The Mountaineers rallied for the win after losing the doubles point to open the match. In doubles play, the Mount's No.3 tandem of
Filippos Zachiotis and
Jarrett Karnibad topped Howard's Gabe Knowles and Kyle Martin, 7-5. That was not enough to overcome Howard's wins at the No. 1 and No.2 spots to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, the Mountaineers took five of six matches to earn the victory.Â
Giovanni Abriola started the scoring with a 6-3 ,6-3 win over Daniel Dunac at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Zachiotis then prevailed at No. 2 singles over Tory Bailey, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 and
Christos Dagklis topped Justin Cadeau, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1 singles to make it 3-1 Mount. Howard's Marcel Dawson edged
Nick Huynh, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, but the Mount's Karnibad prevailed 6-3, 6-2 over Knowles at No. 5 singles to clinch the victory.Â
Marcel Cronin added the final point with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-2 victory over Hassimiyou Dieng at the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
The Mount returns to action this weekend with a pair of Northeast Conference matchups at Merrimack (Feb. 26) and Bryant (Feb. 27).
