Hurlburt’s Last Minute Goal Secures a 10-9 Victory over UMBC

EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 16, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse grinds out a 10-9 behind Zoe Hurlburt's four goals, including the game-winner with 46 seconds remaining. Jordan Groover added three goals and an assist, while Dani Donoghue scored two goals and tallied an assist. The Mount was outshot 40-27 by the Retrievers.

Megan Halczuk, Dymin Gerow, and Claire Bockstie all had three points, with Gerow and Bockstie scoring a hat trick for UMBC.

Madison Bradley made 12 saves for the Mountaineers, a career-high for the junior, while Lexi Roberts made eight saves for UMBC.

The Retrievers scored the game's first goal on a nice pass from Megan Cleverly, but the Mountaineers responded with a goal of their own 32 seconds later when Hurlburt found a cutting Donoghue over the middle and fired it home to tie the game at 1-1. Hurlburt got on the scoresheet with a free position shot that beat Roberts with 9:09 remaining in the quarter. She got her second of the game after she juked her defender out and fired a low shot past the goalie to give the Mount a 3-1 lead.

The Mount and UMBC traded possessions until UMBC broke the scoring drought with 8:00 left in the second quarter. The Mount got their only goal of the quarter when Donoghue went one-on-one with the defender, got around her with a nice move to fire a shot near post, and scored her second goal of the game to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter got off to a fast start with Bockstie's second goal to cut the lead to one, but Groover responded by juking out her defender and firing past the goalie's shoulder to make it 5-3 in favor of the Mount. The Retrievers went on a 3-0 run that spanned 3:06, with Gerow scoring two free position goals to retake the lead at 6-5 going into the fourth quarter.

Groover gave the Mount the lead back with two goals with 11:16 remaining in the fourth. UMBC scored two goals less than a minute apart to retake the lead at 8-7. In the fourth quarter, Hurlburt completed her hat trick with 6:05 left to tie the game at eight. Lindsey Tolliver scored her only goal of the game with the Mountaineers down a man after Donoghue hit her in stride, then Tolliver turned around and fired it past Robert's to make it 9-8. UMBC equalized a minute and a half later on Kolby Weedon's only goal. Hurlburt scored the game-winner after the Mount ran the clock down, then side-stepped her defender to create space and fired a low shot that the goalie could not handle and found the back of the net to secure the Mount's second win of the season.
