ITHACA, N.Y. (November 22, 2022) – Trailing by eight points entering the final period, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball made a run to try a swipe a road win over the Cornell Big Red. However, they found themselves a play or two short and the home side took the contest by a 66-61 final.
Jessica Tomasetti registered a new career high in points with 23 points, shooting for 9-for14 with a pair of triples and three foul shots.
Natalie Villaflor supplied 14 points and added eight boards, matching a career best from her days at Robert Morris. Despite fouling out,
Isabella Hunt contributed 11 rebounds with seven points and five assists.
Freshman Emily Pape was instrumental in Cornell's success, making 10 of 13 to set a new career benchmark with 24 points. Summer Parker-Hall came within one rebound of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Mountaineers withstood a 9-0 Cornell run in the first quarter to hold a lead by the end of the period.
Carissa Dunham scored all five of her points in a row to level the score at 14.
Jasmine Lindsay-Huskey converted a driving layup and Hunt tallied a breakaway layup off a steal. A late three-point play by the Big Red pulled the home side within one and gave them a momentum boost heading into the second quarter.
Tomasetti provided the Mount's offense as the half ended, posting eight points across the first seven minutes. A Villaflor triple rounded out the scoring, but another Cornell run gave them a 37-29 lead at the break.
Offense began to click at the outset of the second half but Cornell found enough gaps in the defense to maintain an eight point lead after two media timeouts. Tomasetti made the only field goal for the rest of the period, but the Mount drew nine Cornell fouls. The nine conversions helped them stay in the contest entering the final frame, 55-47.
Making their charge in the opening minutes, Tomasetti supplied two jumpers to cut the game to four in an instant. Villaflor finished a layup with 7:18 left that brought it down to two. But then the offense went quiet for more than four minutes, allowing Cornell to increase the advantage back to seven.
McKenzie Matheny hit one at the line to stop the small run, which kicked off a spur by the visitors.
Michaela Harrison nailed a clutch trey, followed by another Villaflor drive to cut it to 60-59 with 1:07 to go. Pape provided a crucial shot in return, and the ensuing possession for the Mount came up empty. Foul shots at the end iced the contest for the Big Red.
The defeat drops the Mount to 1-4 this year.
Mount St. Mary's takes a Thanksgiving break before resuming play at Knott Arena with the Catholic Clash against Loyola December 3
rd. The game marks the beginning of a three-game home stand.
