EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 11, 2022) – The start of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for Mount St. Mary's men's soccer has been a successful one, taking points in three of four matches. They go for four straight in a contest with Manhattan Wednesday.
ABOUT THE MOUNT
After securing victories over Canisius and Saint Peter's, the Mount battled Niagara to a 2-2 tie.
Jesus Salazar scored the equalizer with 20 minutes to spare, and the Mountaineers held off the Purple Eagles from there. It marks the team's first draw since March 29, 2021 in a game against Bryant.
Ethan Glaser played a role in both the Saint Peter's and Niagara games, garnering MAAC Wilson Rookie of the Week honors. The freshman from Glen Arm, Md. boasts seven points on the season, divided by two goals and three assists.
By virtue of Siena's win over Marist, the Mount stands in a four-way tie for second place in the league. Manhattan also holds down a spot, along with Iona and Niagara.
ABOUT MANHATTAN
The Jaspers had an opportunity to grab sole possession of first place but conceded twice to Iona in a 2-1 defeat to the Gaels. The loss snapped a four-match unbeaten streak, with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Rider, and Fairfield, as well as a draw with Siena.
Led by four goals from Johan Velez, Manhattan holds a slight outpacing of opponents, 15-13. Goalkeeper Danny DiMarco is a big reason why, boasting a 0.59 goals-against average with five shutouts.
ALL-TIME SERIES
This is the first time Mount St. Mary's and Manhattan meet on a soccer pitch. However, Head Coach
Bryan Cunningham has a win over the Jaspers, defeating them 2-1 in a contest while he was at Central Florida.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Waldron Family Stadium welcomes back the Mountaineers Saturday (Oct. 15) for a noon showdown with Siena.
