Bowling Defeats #3 Nebraska, Starts 3-1 in Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. (January 8, 2022) – The No. 9 nationally ranked Mount St. Mary's bowling team started the second semester of competition on a strong note, going 3-1 and placing fourth on the opening day of the Stormin' Blue & White Vegas Classic.

The day was highlighted by a win over #3 ranked Nebraska, the defending NCAA National Champions. The Mount also defeated Spalding and Texas Southern while suffering a lone loss to #5 Vanderbilt. Senior Rebecca Dodson led the way for the Mount with a 21.14 baker frame average. Senior Danielle Milo (20.54), sophomore Alyssa Alexander (20.16), and senior Tamera Stanton (20.15) all eclipsed the 20.00 mark. Junior Amanda Yeung provided a nice spark off the bench with an 18.92 frame average.

#9 Mount: 1,061 | #3 Nebraska: 927
The Mount started off with a NCAA Tournament rematch against #3 Nebraska. Huge advantages of 237-182, 224-198, and 246-184 helped the Mountaineers achieve their first ever victory over the defending champs. The win also marked the highest ever ranked victory in program history.

#9 Mount: 927 | #5 Vanderbilt: 980
The lone for the Mountaineer would come across Vanderbilt in a 980-927 defeat. A string of three opens late in game four proved too costly forthe Mount to overcome. MSM is now 2-1 against the Commodores this season.

#9 Mount: 1,004 | BYE
The Mount got back above 1,000 during the bye. Yeung came in off the bench early in the round and helped MSM to a 246 game four and 211 game five after nine consecutive games under the 200 mark after the hot start.

#9 Mount: 939 | Texas Southern: 921
The Mountaineers would need every ounce of cushion they had to hold off a 243-158 advantage for the Tigers in game five. The previous four games for MSM were a respectable 199, 202, 184, and 196. The win moved the ladies to 2-1 on the day.

#9 Mount: 1,054 | Spalding: 762
The Mount started and finished strong on the day, concluding day one of competition with a 1,054 set. Four of five games eclipsed the 200 mark in a decisive victory over Spalding.

"We had a game plan coming in on how we wanted to attack this pattern and for the most part I think we executed very well," said head coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "There were a couple moments in the Vanderbilt match I thought we got a little too tight with our lines, but we quickly got past that in route to a good day on the lanes. The win against Nebraska is huge for our program, but a chance to win come Monday would be even bigger. Another solid day tomorrow would give us a great opportunity to do just that."

The Mountaineers currently sit fourth out of 13 teams entering traditional play tomorrow. The top four teams entering Monday will have a chance at the tournament crown. Competition tomorrow begins at 10:00 AM PT and can be streamed live on FloBowling.com ($).
