EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 3, 2021) – After a relatively even opening frame, the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team conceded a pair of goals in the second half to Lafayette. The Leopards countered with a shutout, sending the Mount home with a 3-0 defeat Friday evening.
Most of the Mount's (1-1) offensive chances came in the first half, as they matched the Leopards by shooting five shots.
Jack Shearer was the leading taker, firing three shots including two on goal. The graduate student would add a fourth, but the Mountaineers were eclipsed in the second half shot count, seven to two.
Lafayette (2-1) cracked the scoreboard in the 11
th minute when Connor Houlihan met the ball at the back post, sending a shot past the Mountaineer defense. Shearer had a chance with 16 minutes left in the half, but keeper Alex Sutton secured the save.
Second half goals from Yiannis Panayides in the 57
th minute and Jack Borden in the 82
nd minute sealed the match for the home side. A shot in the 78
th minute by Shearer was the lone shot on goal for the Mount in the half.
The two-match road trip moves on to North Jersey for a Labor Day (Sept. 6) showdown with Rutgers. A 7 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
