Smithfield, R.I. (September 26, 2021)--Mount St. Mary's lost at Bryant, 3-1, in the Northeast Conference opener on Sunday afternoon. Freshman
Marcus Lewis scored his first collegiate goal for the Mountaineers on a rebound attempt off a
Dominique Giovannini free kick.
Bryant's Ben Williams struck for a pair of goals in a span of 1:55 to give the Bulldogs (2-3-2, 1-0-0 NEC) an early two-goal advantage. Bryant earned a corner kick and Williams collected the ball in the box and fired the shot home for the 1-0 lead. Williams headed home a free kick for the second goal just 1:55 later. Bryant took the 2-0 lead to the locker room at the break. Bryant held an 11-to-7 shot advantage in the opening half, but a narrow 3-to-2 edge in shots on goal.
The Mount had a chance in the 56th minute, but
Karamo Bah's shot was stopped by Bryant goalkeeper Jack Bacon.
Juan Molina had a scoring opportunity blocked by the Bryant defense a few minutes later, but it was Bryant that scored the critical third goal in the 73rd minute for a three-goal lead.
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard in the 74th minute when they took advantage of a free kick from just outside the box. Dominique Giovanni put a solid shot on goal and Lewis collected the rebound and knocked home the shot to cut the deficit to 3-1. Giovanni and Molina had back-to-back opportunities to cut further into the deficit in the 80th minute, but saw their shots stopped by Bryant keeper Bacon.
Bryant finished the game with a 17-to-13 shot advantage while each team put six shots on goal in the game. The Mount generated nine corner kicks in the contest compared to Bryant's six.
Ethan Russell made three saves for the Mount in the contest while Bacon made five saves for the Bulldogs.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Thursday, September 30, with a 2:00 p.m. home game against Central Connecticut.
