Mount St. Mary’s Halted By Penn’s Ten Minute Stretch

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 17, 2021) – A tight contest between the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team and the Penn Quakers unraveled between minutes 30 and 40 at Rhodes Field. The home side scored three goals in that span, sending the Mount away with a 5-1 defeat.

The Mount received the first opportunities, bolstered by three shots in the opening minutes. All three headed towards the net but were either saved or blocked by the Quakers defense. In the 14th minute, Penn got on the board with a goal from Matt Leigh.

Jack Shearer supplied a near immediate response for the Mountaineers, taking a cross from Marcus Lewis and scoring the equalizer. For the graduate student, the strike serves as his first goal and points in a Mount St. Mary's uniform.

Penn's counter came swiftly after Shearer's goal, with several shots coming after the 20th minute. Mount's defense held for 10 minutes, but Kai Lammers broke through the line in the 31st minute to give the Quakers their second lead. Seizing on momentum, the Philadelphians struck for two more goals before the half was over.

Most of the second half passed without much action from either side. Several Mountaineers got their chances for playing time as the time ticked down, including four making their 2021 debuts. Penn fired six shots during the last frame, tacking on an 89th minute goal from Stas Korzeniowski.

Mount St. Mary's returns home Wednesday (Sept. 22) as they host George Washington. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium.
