Wroblewski’s Late Heroics, Russell’s Strong Debut Come in OT Defeat to UMBC

EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 14, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's sophomore forward Alek Wroblewski forced overtime with a goal in the final minutes, but UMBC countered in the extra frame to take Tuesday's match, 2-1, in Catonsville.

For Wroblewski, the late heroic served as his second goal in as many games and put him atop the team's leaderboard in scoring.

Fellow sophomore Ethan Russell was also instrumental in providing the Mount's late opportunity in what was his college debut. The Winchester, Va. native secured 10 saves, the most for a Mountaineer since Bobby Edwards against LIU Brooklyn in 2018, keeping the match within striking distance for Wroblewski and company.

Russell was tested early by the Retriever offense, fending off three shots in the opening few minutes. Despite several set pieces, UMBC denied most shots from the Mount offense. In the 36th minute, the Retrievers cashed in with a goal from Taylor Calheira.

After being held to two shots for almost 60 minutes, the Mount found a way to break through the defense and unleash a barrage of attempts at the net. Four shots were fired in the course of a couple minutes looking for the tie. UMBC responded with two saves while the other two attempts sailed over the top.

Events passed quietly for 20 minutes as the timer wound down. Sensing a final chance off a free kick, Karamo Bah sent the ball towards the box. Three Retrievers had opportunities to clear, but the ball found Wroblewski's foot who delivered the equalizer into the right corner.

In the extra session, Juan Molina had the first window to close the match but UMBC's defense sealed the gap just enough to force a wide shot. Two minutes later, Calheira scored off a corner kick to deliver the final blow on the Mount's comeback attempt.

Mount St. Mary's remains on the road, challenging Penn Friday night (Sept. 17) in Philadelphia.
