Emmitsburg, Md. (September 12, 2021)--Elisabeth Rockhill scored with just over 10 minutes remaining to lift Mount St. Mary's past UMBC, 2-1, on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Waldrn Family Stadium on campus. Rockhill scored the game-winner just 45 seconds after UMBC had tied the score. The Mount improves to 2-6 on the season with the victory.
After UMBC tied the score with 11:20 left in regulation, the Mount struck back quickly to take the lead.
Kalli Bell had a quick start off a free kick from midfield, lofting the ball over the defense to a streaking Rockhill, who tucked the ball off the far post and into the back of the net for the go-ahead marker. It is Rockhill's team-leading fourth goal of the season, and the senior has scored a goal in each of the Mount's past three games.
The Retrievers (2-2-2) took advantage of a corner kick opportunity to tie the score with 11:20 left in regulation. Megan Chun lofted the corner kick to the middle of the box where Emma Heijstee tapped the ball across to Caroline Koutsos who knocked the ball home to make it a 1-1 game.
After a scoreless first half, the Mount grabbed the lead in the 58th minute on a
Hannah Cooksey tally. Bell sent Cooksey in on goal and the junior tapped the ball past UMBC goalkeeper Morgan McGruder to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage. The Mountaineers had a terrific scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute when
Lindsay Reightler sent a shot that caromed off the cross bar to
Alexa Dragisics. Dragisics collected the rebound, but saw her scoring chance denied by a diving McGruder.
Arden Lembryk earned the win in goal for the Mount, making seven saves in the game. McGruder made three saves for the Retrievers. The Mount outshot UMBC, 13-12, in the game while UMBC had a narrow 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
