Salazar’s Golden Goal Sends Mount Soaring to Opening Night Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 26, 2021) – In a come-from-behind dramatic victory, Mount St. Mary's sophomore Jesus Salazar sent the home crowd away cheering as the Mount took the 2021 season opener over Saint Peter's, 2-1, in extra time.

His first-ever appearance for the Mountaineers (1-0-0), Salazar started the contest and played all 94 minutes. The three shots he took were tied with Juan Molina, who drew the match level with a strike in the 66th minute.

A quiet first half proved unindicative of the thrills to come. Mount took the edge on shots 6-4 with five shots on goal, most of which were easily secured by Saint Peter's net minder Guillem Badenes Mecho.

The Peacocks (0-1-0) increased the tension at the onset on the second half. Awarded a free kick by the official right outside of the book, SPU's Jamie Davis delivered a strike towards the left corner. No player from either side was able to interrupt the shot as it sailed past the posts for a 1-0 lead to the visitors.

After Mountaineers keeper Adam Siviter refused two more Saint Peter's opportunities, the Mount got their chance. Alek Wroblewski created space for an on-target shot. When it was smacked away by the keeper, the rebound arrived at the welcoming foot of Molina who drove it into the exposed net.

As both sides upped the pressure to go ahead, events began to get chippy with the referee dishing out several yellow cards to maintain order. Several chances led to off-target shots as the contest progressed to overtime.

Saint Peter's got the first crack on offense in the extra frame, but the Mount's defense denied any shots. Gaining possession and benefiting from a free kick, sophomore Adao Manuel received the ball and delivered a cross into the box, where Salazar completed the win.

Mount St. Mary's faces Patriot League foe Lafayette next Friday (Sept. 3) as they look for a win streak. Kickoff is 7 p.m. from Easton.
