EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 15, 2021) – Down 7-2, the Mount St. Mary's baseball team rallied to within one run of Central Connecticut in the final home game of the 2021 season. But the visiting Blue Devils denied the Mount's last rally in an 8-7 win.
Three Mountaineers hit balls over the fence, with freshman
Efrain Correa, Jr. dealing the biggest blow with a three-run shot in the sixth inning.
AJ Holcomb and
Ryan Fisher added solo shots – part of three hit days for both players.
The pitching staff struck out seven CCSU batters, with reliever
Luke Pryor throwing 1 2/3 scoreless frames.
Fisher drove in three runs, including the first two for the Mount, sending
Myles Nicholson home both times via a single in the first and a double in the third. Central Connecticut struck back hard with six runs in the fourth inning for their 7-2 lead.
Holcomb's homer blazed the comeback trail for the Mountaineers, and Correa's shot pulled the game to within a run. With a Blue Devil insurance run pushing the lead back up to two, the Mount staged a pair of rallies to come back.
With two on in the eighth,
Tyler Long singled to right field. Pinch runner
Kai Cummings created a bang-bang play at the dish, but CCSU catcher Sam Loda applied the tag in time.
Fisher's home run came to lead off the ninth, electrifying the Mount dugout. The tying run made it into scoring position but after Holcomb drew an intentional walk, the Blue Devils turned a double play to take the win and sweep the series.
Mount's 2021 season wraps up in Rhode Island next weekend when they take on Bryant May 21
