EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 13, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's battled to a 1-1 tie with Northeast Conference (NEC) contender Central Connecticut before the Blue Devils rallied with six runs in the sixth to take the opening contest by an 8-2 final.
Freshman
Ryan Ament made his first collegiate start for the Mountaineers, handling the assignment well with just an unearned run in five innings of work. The Parlin, N.J. native fanned eight Blue Devils along the way, lowering his season ERA to 6.29.
On offense,
Connor Dulin had two hits, the only player on the Mount to register a multi-hit game.
CCSU opened the scoring in the third thanks to a few well-placed infield hits. Twice the Blue Devils attempted sacrifice bunts, but both runners reached via an error and a hustle single. The Mount was able to limit the damage, and
Thomas Bramley tied the score in the fifth with his third home run of the year.
The sixth inning swung the game in the Blue Devils' favor. A trio of RBI singles along with a hit batter and an ill-timed error allowed CCSU to plate six players.
Thomas Savastio responded with an RBI single to score
Brady Drawbaugh in the bottom half of the frame. Central Connecticut pulled off a double steal to send a runner home and take the run back.
Reliever Dylan Sabia faced the minimum number of Mountaineers to complete the win for CCSU. Blue Devils starter Andrew Braun pitched seven frames to earn the win, improving his record to 7-1.
Game two between the squads takes place Friday (May 14) afternoon. Before first pitch, the Mount honors its seniors with a 12:30 p.m. ceremony.
