Jordan Weaver's Two-Hitter Leads Mount Softball to Split Against Delaware on Senior Day

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 1, 2021)—Jordan Weaver tossed a two-hit complete-game victory in her first start of the season to lead Mount St. Mary's past Delaware, 5-1, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader on Senior Day at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.  The Blue Hens outslugged the Mount, 13-6, in the opening game.

A graduate student, Weaver was making her first start of the season on Senior Day in today's second game.  She came through with a gem, holding the Blue Hens to two hits while striking out six in the complete-game win.  It is Weaver's first win since picking up a victory in relief against Morgan State on April 24, 2019.

After Weaver set the Blue Hens (21-7) down in order in the top of the first, the Mount broke through with a run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Kaylee Stoner led off with a single up the middle.  Bridgette Gilliano grounded into a fielder's choice, and Kaia Bonshock then delivered a double to the fence in left center field to plate Gilliano with the game's initial run.

The Mountaineers (18-25) added three more runs in the bottom of the second to take control of the game.  Lexi Donovan beat out an infield hit to short, and then stole second base, to set the table.  Kirsten Mumma reached on an error by the shortstop to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Delaware got the first out at the plate on Maggie Kane's groundout to second with Kane moving to second on the play.  Mariah Godde then recorded an infield hit to load the bases, and Stoner drilled a double to left to plate a pair of runs for a 3-0 advantage.  Gilliano added a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to four.
The Mount made it 5-0 with a run in the bottom of the third.  Tori Bowles doubled to center field to lead off the inning, and she came home to score on Mumma's double to the left-center field gap.

Delaware got their lone run in the top of the fifth when Julz Garber doubled to scored Sarah Bessel, who had reached on a two-out walk, to make it 5-1.  Weaver took control from there, retiring the final seven batters to secure the win.

Stoner and Bowles each had multi-hit games for the Mountaineers.  Stoner had three hits on the day, giving her 188 for her career.  She needs six more hits to break the Mount's all-time hit record of 193 set by Amanda Burk (2006-09).

Delaware outslugged the Mount, 13-6, in the opening game.  It was a back-and-forth affair in the early going with the game tied at 5 after three innings of play.  The Blue Hens scored six runs over the final two innings to break open a one-run game to earn the win.

The Mount scored three times in the bottom of the first on RBI singles from Liz King, Donovan and Mumma to take a 3-1 lead.  Delaware answered with four runs in the second, highlighted by Brooke Glanden's two-run homer, to take a 5-3 lead.  Bowles provided an RBI single in the bottom of the second, and Godde's squeeze bunt brought home a run in the third to tie the score at 5-5.

Karolina Flores hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give Delaware a 7-5 lead, but the Mount responded again, cutting the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth.  The Mount loaded the bases on Godde and Abigayle Perry singles and a walk to Bonshock.  Bowles was hit by a pitch to bring home a run, but Delaware pitcher Emily Winburn got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

Brittney Mendoza homer to left to lead off the sixth, and a sacrifice fly from Chayanna Gallardo made it 9-6.  The Blue Hens sealed the win with four in the top of the seventh with Glanden connecting for her second home run of the day in the inning.

Donovan went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Mount while Mumma and Godde each had a pair of hits.

The Mount honored its seniors in between games of the doubleheader.  The list included Kate Wade and Erin Meagher from last year's team along with Amanda Berkley, Donovan, Godde, Mumma, Stoner and Weaver.

The Mount will look to secure a spot in the Northeast Conference playoffs next weekend with a four-game series at Wagner on May 8-9.  The Mount currently holds a 1.5-game lead over Sacred Heart for the fourth and final spot in the NEC Tournament.
