SMYRNA, Tenn. (April 17, 2021) – The Mount bowling team currently sits third at the Intercollegiate Team Championships sectional qualifier in Smyrna, Tenn. The top four teams from each of the four sectionals nationwide will advance to the 16-team national bracket this May in Grand Rapids, Mich.
After starting slow with a 744 four-game block, the Mount went 777, 811, and 783 before faltering to a daily low 739 to close. The Mountaineers were led by Juniors Rebecca Dodson and Tamera Stanton with baker frame averages of 20.36 and 19.71, respectively. Freshman Katherine Corbin also provided a big push with a 19.12 baker frame average.
"While we certainly know we left some pins out there, we also know we are in a great position to close the deal tomorrow and punch a second nationals ticket this season," said head coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "There is no excuse that last set should have been lower than 800, but at the same time as a coach over the course of 40 games we have to understand there will be some down moments. If we can keep that our second lowest set, I think we will be in good shape. Hopefully we can punch a 900 tomorrow and keep our heads above even not only to make nationals, but to give us a chance to win the sectional as well."
McKendree University, the number one overall seed at last week's NCAA tournament, currently leads the Smyrna Sectional with a total pinfall of 4015. North Carolina A&T, another NCAA tournament participant, currently sits second with a 3898. Mount St. Mary's (3854), Webber International (3810), and Maryville (3755) round out the top five.
