EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 11, 2021) – A three-run seventh inning pulled Mount St. Mary's baseball within two runs of Sacred Heart, but the Pioneers held on for a 6-4 victory. The defeat drops the Mount to 5-20 (1-11 NEC) this season and extends their losing streak to 10 games.
The Mount out hit the Pioneers in the finale, 7-5. Catcher
Thomas Bramley had a multi-hit game, including a double that drove home two runs.
Ryan Haddaway extended his hitting streak to three games and five out of the last six.
Closer
Patrick Burke delivered two scoreless frames at the end of the contest to keep hope alive for a Mountaineers comeback.
The game opened as a pitchers' duel with
Jordan Geber and SHU's Ryan LaMay going toe-to-toe. Both pitchers surrendered one hit each through the first three innings.
Sacred Heart found pay dirt in the fourth with a four-run inning. Three of the four came with two outs on the scoreboard. The Pioneers added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.
With LaMay continuing to deal for the visitors, it took the Mount six innings to break the shutout.
Myles Nicholson brought home
Ryan Fisher on an RBI single. The seventh allowed the Mountaineers to get back into the ballgame. Bramley's double scored Haddaway and
Andrew Malone to close the gap to three. The catcher himself scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit down to two.
But to help obtain the sweep, Sacred Heart turned to closer Brendan Coffey. He recorded his sixth save by retiring the final eight Mountaineer batters, adding a strikeout along the way. The Pioneers improved to 13-15 and 8-4 in the NEC this season.
Mount St. Mary's travels to Hackensack, N.J. for a series with Fairleigh Dickinson next weekend.
