Mount Baseball Takes Shortened Slugfest at Straw

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 5, 2021) – Impending darkness was the friend of the Mount St. Mary's baseball team Friday afternoon. After battling Coppin State to a 10-9 score through seven and a half frames, the umpire called the contest at sunset to preserve a Mount win.

The Mount improves to 2-4, while Coppin State drops to 0-5.

Coppin stormed out to the first lead with a three run homer by Sebastien Sarabia in the first inning. The Eagles would tack on an additional run on a sacrifice fly to lead 4-0 after an inning and a half.

Mount St. Mary's responded in the bottom of the second with a three-run rally, capped off by a two-run double by Brady Drawbaugh. The Mount tied the score in the third on a bases loaded walk to CJ Kozorosky. The next batter, Thomas Bramley, whacked an offering over the right field fence for a grand slam.

AJ Holcomb and Drawbaugh added RBI doubles to extend the lead. Coppin State made a rally in the sixth, scoring five runs including a home run from catcher Mike Dorcean.

Mount St. Mary's retired Coppin in order in the seventh and left a runner stranded in the eighth. At the middle of the eighth, the umpires took a look at the skies and decided the game could go no further.

The Mount put together 10 runs off seven hits. Brady Drawbaugh was the lone Mountaineer to have a multi-hit game. Ryan Ament and Patrick Burke threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball to close the game, with Ament striking out four Eagles.

Coppin State got multiple hits from Dorcean, Sarabia and Darren Hagan.

Games two and three will be played in a pair of seven inning contest during a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
